Pakistan Tests Nuclear-Capable Missile

11 August 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Pakistan's military says it today successfully test-fired a cruise missile capable of carrying nuclear and conventional warheads.

A military statement says the missile, named Babur, has a range of 500 kilometers, and can carry any type of warhead and penetrate undetected into enemy targets. Neither the launch site nor the target was disclosed.

Pakistan and neighboring India -- both nuclear powers -- agreed last week to inform each other about missile tests but military spokesman Major General Shaukat Sultan said the agreement only covers ballistic missiles and did not cover today's test.

The two countries have fought three wars since independence from Britain in 1947. India and Pakistan initiated a peace process in January 2004 and agreed to enter negotiations to resolve their disputes, including the Himalayan territory of Kashmir.
