Turkmen Performers Thank Niyazov For Music Ban

Saparmurat Niyazov 24 August 2005 -- Turkmen performers have thanked President Saparmurat Niyazov for his decision to ban the use of playback music at public events, on television and at weddings.

Niyazov issued the ban at a cabinet meeting on 22 August citing what he called the "negative influence" of the use of playback music on the development of Turkmen performing art.

Turkmen television reported that at a meeting yesterday, singers and composers thanked Niyazov for his parental care in "protecting the national principles of the Turkmen people in art and in culture and particularly in singing musical performances."

A singer identified in the report as M. Bayramgeldiyev said that "it is impossible to express one's deep love of the homeland, people and native land when there is a sound recording instead of live voice and live sound."
