Iran Threatens To Stop UN Nuclear Inspections

International inspectors recently installed new monitoring equipment at the controversial uranium-enrichment facility at Isfahan 7 October 2005 -- Iran's foreign minister today threatened to stop UN nuclear inspections, as thousands rallied in Tehran in support of the country's right to a peaceful nuclear program.

Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki told state television that Iran could end unfettered inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) unless the UN's atomic watchdog changes its resolution on Iran at a November meeting.

The resolution, passed in September, warns Iran could be referred to the UN Security Council for possible sanctions unless it allays fears over its nuclear program.

Meanwhile, more than 1,000 people gathered in central Tehran protested today, chanting slogans that included "Nuclear energy is our right" and "Death to America, Death to Israel."

Similar state-sponsored rallies were held in cities across the country, state media reported.
