Karzai Condemns Alleged Taliban Burning, Demands Inquiry

President Hamid Karzai (file photo) (epa) 21 October 2005 -- Afghan President Hamid Karzai today condemned the alleged burning of the bodies of two suspected Taliban militiamen by U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan.

Karzai said the top U.S. general in Afghanistan, Karl Eikenberry, informed him of the alleged incident. Karzai said he demanded a quick U.S. inquiry, and said Afghan officials have started their own investigation.

The allegations became public on 19 October after an Australian television channel aired footage of the bodies allegedly being burnt by U.S. troops in the village of Gonbaz, north of Kandahar.

The report said the footage was filmed in early October by an Australian photojournalist who was embedded in a U.S. unit.
