Joint Offensive In Iraq Enters Day Three

7 November 2005 -- U.S. and Iraqi troops are battling militants in house-to-house-fighting on the third day of an offensive against insurgents in a town near the Syrian border.

U.S. Colonel Stephen Davis said today that one U.S. soldier was killed in fighting in Husaybah, a town some 320 kilometers northwest of Baghdad. He said at least 36 insurgents have been killed in the U.S.-led assault, and that some 200 men have been detained.

Meanwhile, in the capital Baghdad, two mortar rounds exploded today in the heavily fortified Green Zone, where Iraq's government and the U.S. Embassy are based. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

Also today, Iraqi President Jalal Talabani is due to arrive in Rome. He is scheduled to meet with senior Italian officials and with Pope Benedict XVI at the Vatican during his visit, which is expected to end on 12 November.
