Security officials in Serbia say Mladic may have been in Russia recently and was now possibly hiding somewhere in Serbia.
Police said they intercepted a cell phone call he made. They not, however, give any further details.
Mladic is wanted by the UN tribunal in The Hague for crimes committed in Sarajevo and Srebrenica during the Balkans war between 1992 and 1995.
