Gunmen Attack Kyrgyz Border Guards

(RFE/RL) 27 January 2006 -- Kyrgyzstan's border protection service today reported that gunmen opened fire on Kyrgyz border guards before fleeing into Uzbek territory.

The Kyrgyz Border Guard Service says that a border patrol in southern Kyrgyzstan spotted two people attempting to cross into Kyrgyz territory from Uzbekistan on 26 January.

The service says that when border guards moved in to detain the two, they were fired upon. Kyrgyz guards returned fire with "warning shots" before the two fled across into Uzbek territory.

The service says that later in the day, border guards came across another six people carrying arms. They, too, reportedly ignored border guards' orders and ran away into Uzbekistan.

No injuries were reported in either of the incidents. Such incidents have been occurring on the Kyrgyz-Uzbek border for several years.
