The military said in a statement the blast occurred in Oruzgan Province as troops were patrolling in an armored Humvee.

Shortly after the blast, militants fired at the troops with guns and rocket-propelled grenades. The statement said the military called in air support.

Earlier today reports said that Taliban guerrillas had ambushed a militia unit working with U.S. forces in southern Helmand Province. Reports say the militants killed eight men.
