Amnesty Says Human Rights Abuse Widespread In Iran

President Mahmud Ahmadinejad's government appears to have increased repression since taking office one year ago, a new Amnesty International report says (file photo) (epa) PRAGUE, 16 February 2006 (RFE/RL) -- Human rights violations remain widespread in Iran, where the new government has failed to take action to address the situation, according to Amnesty International.

That is the central conclusion of a new report entitled, "Iran: New Government Fails To Address Dire Human Rights Situation," by the London-based international rights advocacy group.

The group expresses concern about what it says appears to be intensifying repression since the new government took office in August 2005.

The report says current tensions over the country's nuclear program must not distract either the government or the international community from addressing the country's human rights problems.
