Kyrgyz President Dismisses National Guard Commander


Kyrgyz soldiers at a parade on March 24 to mark the first anniversary of the toppling of the regime of President Askar Akaev (file photo) (RFE/RL) May 25, 2006 -- Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiev today dismissed the commander in chief of the National Guard, Sultan Kurmanov.


No official reason for his dismissal was given.


Kurmanov had been in charge of the National Guard since September 2005.


Kurmanov will be replaced with General Asanbek Alymkozhoev, a former commander of the Kyrgyz military in southern Kyrgyzstan.
