Southern Afghanistan Tense After Major Taliban Strikes


(RFE/RL) June 13, 2006 -- Reports say southern Afghanistan remains tense after Afghan and U.S.-led forces killed up to 37 Taliban fighters in military operations on June 12.


General Rahmatullah Raufi said a brother-in-law of fugitive Taliban chief Mullah Mohammad Omar is believed to have been those killed in the fighting.


In the country's eastern Paktiya Province, a roadside bomb killed two civilians and wounded six.
