Bulgarian Muslim Pupils Banned From Wearing Headscarves

A Tajik girl wearing a hijab (RFE/RL) July 28, 2006 -- Two Bulgarian Muslim girls have been forbidden to wear headscarves in school, after a parliamentary anti-discrimination commission ruled on July 28 the school had the right to impose the ban.

The little-known Organization for Islamic Development and Culture, based in Smolian in southern Bulgaria, set a precedent in June when it lodged a complaint on behalf of the two girls after the director of their school banned all religious symbols.
