U.S. Senate Delegation Visits Georgia


Georgian Prime Minister Zurab Noghaideli (left) greets U.S. Senator Richard Lugar (epa) August 22, 2006 -- A U.S. Senate delegation led by Richard Lugar, the chairman of the Committee on Foreign Relations, today arrived in Georgia on a two-day visit.


Prime Minister Zurab Noghaideli met with the U.S. Senators for talks that he said focused on energy security.


Lugar reiterated the United States' support for Georgia's integration into NATO and the peaceful resolution of the Abkhaz and South Ossetian conflicts.


He said the U.S. government agreed with Georgia that Russian peacekeepers should leave the conflict zones.


The senators are scheduled to meet with President Mikheil Saakashvili before they leave Georgia on August 24.


The U.S. delegation arrived in Tbilisi from Baku.
