NATO Chief Leads Talks On Afghan Reinforcements


NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer (left) with Afghan President Hamid Karzai in July (epa) September 11, 2006 -- NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer today called an extraordinary meeting of alliance ambassadors to discuss troops needs in Afghanistan.


Spokesman James Appathurai said the talks were to inform NATO's 26 member countries about the situation in Afghanistan and look at ways to increase the number of troops.


Appathurai said no decisions on extra troops or who might provide them would be made at the meeting.
