Bosnian Serb Gets 27-Year Sentence

(RFE/RL) September 27, 2006 -- The UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague today sentenced Bosnian Serb politician Momcilo Krajisnik to 27 years in prison for war crimes.

Krajisnik was a close ally of Bosnian Serb wartime leader Radovan Karadzic. He was found guilty of persecution, murder, and deportation of civilians during the 1992-95 war in Bosnia.

However, Krajisnik was acquitted of genocide that could have resulted in a life sentence.

The conviction stemmed from the Bosnian Serb campaign of ethnic cleansing of Muslims.

Families of war victims in Bosnia-Herzegovina strongly condemned the verdict, describing as "shameful" the court's decision to find Krajisnik not guilty of genocide.

Krajisnik was arrested in 2001 in Pale after French NATO troops blew off the door to his home.
