Ordinary Afghans May Turn On NATO, Commander Warns

General David Richards, the British commander of NATO troops in Afghanistan (file photo) (epa) October 16, 2006 -- The commander of NATO-led forces in Afghanistan is warning that the international community risks losing the support of the Afghan people unless it quickly fulfills promises to provide reconstruction and development assistance.

British Lieutenant-General David Richards said in an interview with Britain's Sky News television on October 15 that NATO forces are succeeding in the fight against Taliban militants, but that there needs to be more progress in the reconstruction process to prevent the Afghan people from turning against foreign forces.
