Uzbekistan Sentences Five For Spying For Tajikistan

(RFE/RL) TASHKENT, November 17, 2006 (RFE/RL) -- An Uzbek military court has sentenced five people, three women and two men, to prison terms of 15 to 20 years for spying for Tajikistan.

Two of those sentenced are citizens of Uzbekistan, two are from Tajikistan, and the other is "a person without citizenship."

A spokesman for Uzbekistan's National Security Service, Olimjon Toraqulov, confirmed the court decision today to RFE/RL's Uzbek service and said the charges against the five people date back two years.

Tajik-Uzbek relations have been tense all year. Tajikistan jailed several people earlier this year after they were found guilty of spying for Uzbekistan.
