Bush Vows To Veto Iraq Funding Legislation

George W. Bush (file photo) (official site) March 23, 2007 -- U.S. President George W. Bush today said he will veto legislation that links funds for the Iraq war to a timeline for the troop withdrawal.

His statement came shortly after the U.S. House of Representatives voted to impose a deadline of the end of August 2008 for withdrawing all U.S. combat forces from Iraq.

The Democrats, who control the House, succeeded in a 218-212 vote to attach the deadline to legislation authorizing more than $124 billion in funds for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Bush today described the bill as "an act of political theater" that has "no chance of becoming law." He said he will veto if it reaches his desk.
