Taliban Launch Attacks Northeast Of Kabul

(RFE/RL) April 17, 2007 -- Dozens of Taliban fighters today reportedly raided police posts and a district government headquarters northeast of Kabul.

Provincial Governor Abdul Sattar Murad said several Taliban fighters were killed and up to five police officers wounded in the attacks in the Tagab district of Kapisa Province, 70 kilometers from the capital.

Murad said government forces received U.S. military support. A U.S. military spokesperson was unable to confirm that.

Earlier today, a roadside bomb was detonated near a UN vehicle in the southern province of Kandahar, killing four Nepali contractors and their Afghan driver.

A Taliban commander, Mullah Hayatullah Khan, claimed responsibility, saying that people helping foreign forces were targets.

In a separate attack, a blast at a school compound in the western city of Herat killed two students and wounded four.
