The correspondent, who works for RFE/RL's Arabic-language Radio Free Iraq, was on her way to an interview but never arrived. Police found the body of her driver shot and dumped in the street. Their car remains missing.
RFE/RL President Jeffrey Gedmin expressed deep concern. "RFE/RL is focusing all attention now on finding out what has happened to our colleague,” Gedmin said. “We are working with the authorities in Baghdad and are in constant touch with friends and family. We remain hopeful we will get her back safely."
Radio Free Iraq has lost two journalists this year. In late May, Nazar Abd al-Wahid al-Radhi was killed in the southern city of Al-Amarah, less than two months after his colleague, Khamail Muhsin Khalaf, was abducted and found killed in western Baghdad.
Radio Free Iraq broadcasts 17 hours a day, including five hours of original programming with updates throughout the day. Content is produced in Prague and the Baghdad bureau, and is transmitted to listeners via nationwide AM and satellite signals and FM broadcasts.
