Kazakhstan: Prices To Change Quarterly




Prague, 2 January 1997 (RFE/RL) -- The chairman of Kazakhstan's Anti-Monopoly Committee said today that enterprises, factories, plants, and businesses in Kazakhstan will be limited to raising their prices only once every three months this year.

Nikolay Radostovets said prices can be changed only on January 1, April 1, July 1, and October 1. He said that all the changes of prices will be under a strict control of the Anti-Monopoly Committee.

Radostovets also told correspondents that the cost of cargo transportation services is expected to rise this year. He said railroad cargo transportation services will increase some 27 percent. The cost of international cargo transportation services will be 13 per cent higher.

The official said the price of coal will increase almost 20 percent.

Radostovets also said inflation will bring the rate of the Kazakh currency, the tenge, to some 76 tenge to the U.S. dollar by the end of this year. The current rate is about 72 Kazakh Tenge to the dollar.
