Belarusian police today detained dozens of people during an unauthorized antigovernment protest in Minsk.

An RFE/RL correspondent on the scene said hundreds of people had gathered in the streets to participate in the demonstration.

The Vesna rights group said police arrested more than 100 people.

The Associated Press reported that police used violence against some of the protesters.

Public anger continues to rise against the government in Belarus, which is experiencing its worst economic crisis since the collapse of the Soviet Union.
