Gunmen Kill 12 Shi'ite Muslims In Pakistan

Police in Pakistan say gunmen have killed at least 12 people in an attack apparently targeting Shi'ite Muslims in southwest Pakistan.

Police are quoted as saying the attack occurred today on the outskirts of Quetta, the capital of Baluchistan Province, which borders Iran and Afghanistan.

The Shi'ites were reported to have been traveling by bus before the shooting attack occurred.

Police official Hamid Shakeel is quoted by Reuters news agency as saying the bus was carrying people mostly from the Hazara community, a Shi'ite Muslim ethnic minority.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the bloodshed.

Pakistan is a majority Sunni Muslim state.

Sunni Muslim militants linked to Al-Qaeda and the Taliban regularly carry out attacks on members of Pakistan's Shi'ite minority.
