BISHKEK -- Bishkek Mayor Isa Omurkulov has resigned two days after investigations into alleged abuse of office were launched against him.

Omurkulov told journalists in the Kyrgyz capital on December 4 that his decision to step down has nothing to do with the probe.

Omurkulov declined to say why he was stepping down.

Kyrgyzstan's Prosecutor-General's Office announced two days earlier that Omurkulov and several of his associates are suspected of redefining the borders of central Bishkek's Victory Park to accommodate the existence of illegal construction from 2002 to 2010 and to allow for the raising of new buildings on park grounds.

A spokesman for the Prosecutor-General's Office, Ulugbek Sultanov, told journalists that Omurkulov could face up to 10 years in jail if found guilty.

It is not clear if Omurkulov has been officially charged.

He has denied any wrongdoing.
