The United States has announced it is sending some 600 troops to Poland and the Baltic states to take part in military exercises.

The Pentagon said the U.S. forces, based in Italy, were expected to arrive in Poland on April 23 to start exercises.

A spokesman said on April 22 that U.S. troops are also heading to the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania to participate in exercises due to occur over the next few months.

The move comes after NATO members on the alliance’s eastern edge, including Poland and the Baltic states, called for military reinforcements following Russia’s seizure of Ukraine’s Crimea territory in March.

NATO announced last week that the alliance would be boosting its air, sea, and ground forces in NATO’s eastern members in a bid to discourage any Russian aggression.

Russia is believed to have massed tens of thousands of troops on its border with Ukraine. Moscow says it has no plans to intervene in Ukraine, and has accused Western states of raising tensions by sending forces toward Russia. (AP, AFP)
