Meanwhile, Ukraine scrambles to tackle a growing refugee crisis

Ukraine's foreign ministry says the mob that smashed diplomatic vehicles outside the Russian embassy in Kyiv were "provocateurs."

The first pictures are emerging of Ukrainian servicemen killed when separatists shot down their plane near Luhansk. 49 troops and crew died in the incident, the deadliest yet in the conflict in eastern Ukraine.

Ukrainian officials deny that civilians living in the areas targeted by the government's "antiterrorist operation" have been asked to evacuate.

Acting Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Deshchytsia says authorities were able to "stop the violence and provocation at the Russian embassy" in Kyiv. "But if the Russian aggression continue," he adds," it will become increasingly difficult."

A new round of EU-brokered gas talks between Russia and Ukraine resume tonight in Kyiv. Russia has threatened to cut off supplies if Ukraine fails to pay a $1.95-billion gas debt by Monday.

About 20 Muscovites gathered at the Ukrainian embassy in Moscow to mourn the 49 Ukrainian servicemen and crew killed when their plane was shot down near Luhansk.

RFE/RL's Ukrainian Service has this video of protesters pelting the Russian embassy in Kyiv with eggs to denounce what they call Russia's backing of separatists in eastern Ukraine. The protesters also vandalized diplomatic vehicles parked outside the embassy.
