Afghanistan's top prosecutor has accused the U.S. ambassador to Kabul of telling him to take action against an Afghan banker allegedly involved in fraud or resign.

Speaking to reporters in Kabul, Attorney General Mohammad Ishaq Aloko quoted Karl Eikenberry as telling him: "If you don't jail [Haji Muhammad Rafi Azimi], you must resign.'"

Aloko said his office did not have enough evidence against Azimi, the deputy chairman of the private Afghan United Bank.

The U.S. Embassy in Kabul declined to comment.
