YEREVAN -- A leading Armenian opposition leader says the Armenian National Congress (HAK) should resume its campaign for a change of leadership in Armenia, RFE/RL's Armenian Service reports.
Stepan Demirchian, a former presidential candidate and key ally of HAK leader Levon Ter-Petrosian, said today that President Serzh Sarkisian's resignation and the holding of new elections continue to top the opposition alliance's agenda.
Demirchian, who was once the most popular opposition politician in Armenia, also stressed that his People's Party of Armenia has no reason to end its membership in the HAK and will remain faithful to its alliance with Ter-Petrosian.
The HAK indefinitely suspended antigovernment demonstrations three months ago.
Ter-Petrosian acknowledged at a rally of his supporters in Yerevan in mid-September that the bloc cannot topple Sarkisian without the backing of other opposition forces.
He said they should team up with the HAK to bring about regime change and thereby thwart what he called an "imminent solution" of the conflict over the Nagorno-Karabakh region on "unfavorable terms" for Armenia.
