China has pledged to continue to work for a "peaceful resolution" of the standoff over Iran's contentious nuclear program.

The comments by Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang came after the United States said the Chinese government appeared ready to engage in "serious" negotiations about a possible fourth round of UN sanctions on Iran.

China has been reluctant to consider imposing new sanctions on Iran for failing to take steps to ease concerns over the goal of its nuclear activities. Iranian officials have repeatedly denied Iran is secretly seeking to make atomic weapons.

Iran's chief nuclear negotiator, Said Jalili, arrived in Beijing today for talks with Chinese officials.

Iran's official IRNA news agency said Jalili is discussing the "nuclear issue" with China but did not provide details.
