EU's Barroso Hails Signing Of Romania-Moldova Border Treaty

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso has welcomed Romania and Moldova's upcoming signing of a border treaty, calling it "an excellent example" of regional cooperation.

EU member Romania and Moldova are due to sign the treaty today on the sidelines of a regional summit in Bucharest.

The treaty establishes a framework for the two countries to deal with technical issues such as border maintenance and surveillance.

Bucharest has repeatedly refused to sign a bilateral political treaty with Moldova, most of which was part of Romania before World War II.

The border treaty will be signed by Romania's Foreign Minister Teodor Baconschi and Moldovan Prime Minister Vlad Filat.

The signing of the treaty is seen as a boost for Moldova's ruling pro-Western Alliance for European Integration (AIE) before snap elections in Moldova scheduled for November 28.
