A close aide to Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad says Tehran has started work on a new uranium enrichment plant.

Mojtaba Samareh Hashemi told the ILNA news agency that Ahmadinejad had approved the location of the new site and that the building process had begun.

Iran, which currently enriches uranium at a plant in the central city of Natanz, announced in November that it plans to expand its enrichment activities by building 10 new sites.

UN Security Council permanent members are currently in intense talks about a possible fourth set of UN sanctions against Iran for its failure to suspend uranium enrichment.

Iran says its activities are entirely peaceful.
