CHISINAU -- A leading opposition candidate running for a seat in the Moldovan parliament has told RFE/RL’s Moldovan Service that "there are ways around" the law banning people with dual citizenship from taking office.
Alexandru Tanase, head of the pro-Western Liberal Democrat Party, has Romanian and Moldovan passports.
One of every 10 candidates running in the April 5 parliamentary elections is a dual citizen.
The law, passed by the Communist-dominated parliament last year, was ruled discriminatory by the European Court for Human Rights and directed back to the Moldovan capital for review.
Communist official Vladimir Turcanu told RFE/RL that if any of the five Communist Party candidates running for parliament is elected, they will give up their foreign passport "immediately."
An estimated 100,000 Moldovans are dual citizens, most of them also holding Romanian citizenship.
