More Than 64 Feared Dead In Afghan Avalanches

KABUL (Reuters) -- At least 24 bodies have been recovered and 40 other people are feared dead after avalanches swept vehicles into a ravine and trapped cars in a mountain pass overnight, Afghanistan's Interior Minister said today.

Hanif Atmar told a news conference that 2 kilometers of road had so far been cleared but more people remained trapped after the avalanches, which shut the Salang Pass and blocked a 2.6-kilometer tunnel through the Hindu Kush mountains.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
