U.S. President Barack Obama has spoken by telephone about Iran's nuclear program with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
The White House said Obama told Erdogan that the United States will continue its push for new United Nations sanctions on Iran -- despite a deal brokered earlier this week by Turkey and Brazil under which Iran would send some of its enriched uranium to Turkey in exchange for nuclear fuel.
The White House statement said Obama stressed to Erdogan "the international community's continuing and fundamental concerns about Iran's overall nuclear program" and said Tehran's recent announcement that it will continue to enrich uranium to higher levels does "not build confidence."
The Obama administration on May 18 presented to the UN Security Council a draft resolution on a new set of sanctions against the Islamic republic for refusing to curb enrichment.
Officials say the draft has been agreed to by all five permanent Security Council members -- the United States, China, Russia, Britain, and France.
