Pakistan's Taliban has denied a report their leader Hakimullah Mehsud had been killed in a U.S. drone aircraft strike.

Speaking to the Reuters news agency, a spokesman for the group said the report was "a total lie."

Pakistan's military is investigating the Pakistani TV report that Hakimullah died from wounds sustained in a drone attack and had been buried in the Orakzai tribal region in the northwest of the country.

State TV did not say when the alleged drone attack took place.

Pakistani intelligence officials said they had received unconfirmed reports that Hakimullah may have died of wounds after a drone strike on two vehicles carrying militants in North Waziristan on January 17, days after surviving a similar attack.

Hakimullah appeared in a farewell video with the suicide bomber double agent who killed seven CIA employees in Afghanistan on December 30.
