Severe Winter Weather Creates Havoc In Central Afghanistan

Heavy snowfall is creating havoc in central Afghanistan.

An RFE/RL Radio Free Afghanistan correspondent says at least five people are dead as a result of the extreme winter weather in southern Salang.

Heavy snowfall and avalanches have led to the closure of the main road linking northern and southern Afghanistan.

The correpondent says dozens of people are feared stranded in vehicles trapped in the snow.

Regional officials have declared an emergency and called for help from the government in Kabul.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
