The U.S. military says the number of U.S. soldiers in Iraq has fallen below 50,000.
The military made the announcement in a press release on August 24 but did not give an exact figure of how many troops are currently in the country.
Shortly after coming into office in 2009, President Barack Obama pledged that the United States would end combat operations in Iraq by the end of August, at which point troop figures would drop below 50,000.
The last U.S. combat brigade left Iraq last week.
The remaining U.S. troops in Iraq will concentrate on training Iraqi forces and help with antiterrorism operations, if asked by the Iraqis.
All U.S. soldiers must leave Iraq by the end of 2011.
