Kyrgyzstan on August 31 celebrated 19 years of independence from the Soviet Union. The ceremonies in the capital, Bishkek, were subdued, and President Roza Otunbaeva appeared tearful as she commemorated the victims of June's ethnic violence in the south of the country.

Here's a photograph of the ceremonies in Osh, where much of the bloodshed occurred, with a huge statue of Lenin towering over the proceedings.
