Worldwide Rallies For Iranian Woman Sentenced To Death

Rallies are being held worldwide in support of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, an Iranian woman sentenced to death in Iran for adultery.

Ashtiani was originally sentenced to death by stoning, but the sentence was postponed following a campaign by her grown children and outcry in the West, among other places, as well as from Iranian and international human rights organizations.

Rights campaigners organized protests in some 32 countries including Brazil, Britain, France, Georgia, Germany, Italy, and Sweden to highlight her case.

Ashtiani's death sentence remains in place despite official statements suggesting that the stoning had been halted.

Iran's judiciary is due to review her case soon, but it was unclear when exactly.

The 43-year-old Ashtiani has already received 99 lashes as a result of a judiciary decision that was later abandoned in order to impose the death penalty.
