Armenian Premier Rules Out Early Elections

Armenian Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamian has dismissed opposition calls for an immediate change of government, saying that if such a change is to take place, it will not be through early elections.

On October 24, tens of thousands of supporters of nongoverning and opposition parties gathered in Yerevan, demanding amendments to electoral legislation and calling for early parliamentary and presidential votes.

Speaking to RFE/RL on October 27, Abrahamian said that "all due processes" should be conducted "within the framework of the constitution" and "through the next general elections."

The next parliamentary elections in Armenia are scheduled for 2017.

Abrahamian said the ruling Republican Party of Armenia is ready to discuss issues "raised by any political party."
