Moldovan Activists Keep Site Of Gay-Pride March Secret

CHISINAU -- Gay-rights activists in Moldova said they are keeping the location of a lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) rights march in Chisinau secret for security reasons.

The officially approved march, which is scheduled for May 17, is part of a weeklong "Rainbow Over the Dniester" LGBT festival that will include several other events.

Moldova held two small LGBT marches last year, the first-ever in the country.

Previous attempts had been banned by local authorities or were attacked by Orthodox Church supporters.

On May 15, Moldovan gay rights group GenderDoc-M awarded prizes to two psychologists and a youth center for their work in the LGBT community.

They also gave a "diploma of gratitude" to RFE/RL's Moldovan Service for its reporting on LGBT issues.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
