Five Arrested In Afghanistan For Alleged Suicide-Bombing Plot

KABUL -- Afghan authorities say they have arrested five Taliban-linked militants, including a woman, who were planning to launch suicide attacks against civilians later this month.

Sediq Sediqqi, a spokesman for the Interior Ministry, told reporters the suspects were arrested in the eastern city of Jalalabad on April 18.

He said police seized suicide-bomb vests, explosives, and other weapons from the militants.

Sediqqi said the would-be suicide bombers were trained abroad, and they "have confessed their crime."

They were allegedly planning to launch coordinated attacks on April 27-28 in Kabul and Jalalabad.

April 28 is a public holiday in Afghanistan, marking the fall of the Soviet-backed government of President Najibullah in 1992.
