Allyson Reneau, a mother of 11 and an expert in U.S. space policy, welcomed the Afghan girls' robotics team when they traveled to the United States in 2019 for a technology conference. In mid-August, as Taliban militants descended on Kabul, Reneau leapt into action to help the young engineers flee the country. Ten of the girls aged 16 to 18 have now escaped to Qatar, and Reneau is still at work trying to help others reach safety.
