Afghan President Hamid Karzai has asked Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari to stop attacks on Afghan territory.

A statement released by the Afghan president's office said Karzai and Zardari met on the sidelines of the Organization for Islamic Cooperation summit in Mecca on August 14.

Karzai told Zardari that shelling from the Pakistani side of the border into Afghanistan was having "an extremely negative impact" on Afghan attitudes toward Pakistan.

The statement from the Afghan president's office said, without elaborating, that the "Pakistani delegation also shared with [the] Afghan side their crossborder concerns."

The two leaders agreed to form a joint delegation to visit the border and investigate crossborder shelling claims.
