Senior Militant Commander Arrested In Eastern Afghanistan

NATO says Afghan and coalition forces have arrested a senior commander of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e Taiba (LeT) group in the eastern Afghan province of Ghazni.

A NATO statement said a number of other insurgents were detained during the joint operation in Ghazni’s volatile Andar district on April 15.

The militant commander is believed to have planned and participated in multiple attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in the Kunar, Kandahar, and Ghazni provinces.

NATO's statement did not disclose the commander’s name.

NATO says the commander is known to have links to foreign fighters, and that he was actively planning a high-profile attack at the time of his arrest.

Lashkar-e Taiba, which is banned in Pakistan, is blamed for the November 2008 attacks in Mumbai, India that killed 166 people.

Based on reporting by AP and Radio Free Afghanistan

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
