YEREVAN -- Armenian President Serzh Sarkisian has visited Azerbaijan's breakaway territory of Nagorno-Karabakh to mark the 68th anniversary of the end of World War II.

He took part in celebrations of Victor Day, which is also marked in the mainly Armenian-populated territory as the Day of Nagorno-Karabakh's Army and the anniversary of the "liberation of the town of Shusha."

The history-laden town in Nagorno-Karabakh came under Armenia's control on May 9, 1992.

Armenia and Azerbaijan have been locked in conflict over the separatist region for more than two decades.

After going to war, the sides signed a truce in 1994.

Years of internationally mediated talks have failed to make significant progress in resolving the issue.

The region's independence has never been recognized by any country.
