At Least Five Killed In Afghan Suicide Attack

Afghan police say a suicide bomber has blown himself up outside a mosque in northeast Afghanistan, killing at least five people, including a local police chief.

The blast occurred on December 9 in Kunar province, which borders Pakistan and has been a focal point of the Taliban insurgency.

The attack happened as worshippers were leaving the mosque after Friday prayers in the Ghazi Abad area.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.

Officials said the district police chief -- who was among the victims -- appeared to have been the target of the assault.

The attack came days after an unprecedented twin attack on Shi'ite Muslims in the capital Kabul and the northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif, in which around 60 people were killed.
