'I Kept My Spirit Really High' - Ismayilova Speaks Of Prison Ordeal
RFE/RL journalist Khadija Ismayilova, released from an Azerbaijani prison on May 25, said she was able to remain optimistic in custody, despite her ordeal. She spent 537 days in jail on a series of charges which international observers said were retribution for her investigative reporting on corruption connected to Azerbaijan's ruling family. This week her sentence was reduced from 7 1/2 years to a suspended term of 3 1/2 years, and she walked free. In an interview one day after her release, she called on others to keep fighting for those unjustly imprisoned. (RFE/RL's Azerbaijani Service)
