Belarus Accuses EU States Of Plotting 'Poll Coup'

Belarus today accused EU members Poland and Germany of seeking to topple President Alyaksandr Lukashenka by organizing the December mass protests against his reelection.

"Sovyetskaya Belorussia," the official newspaper of the presidential administration, today said that the German and Polish secret services had devised the plot and Poland had even trained opposition activists.

The newspaper said that organizers, technology, and funds were channeled into Belarus to achieve this aim.

It said that Poland was the main "training ground" for the opposition and that special "training camps" were set up in Poland for "activists."

EU member states have condemned the security crackdown and the detention of hundreds of activists, including candidates who stood against Lukashenka, following the December 19 protest.
