Activists Protesting Energy Price Hikes Detained In Bishkek

Five activists of Kyrgyzstan's Jany Muun (New Generation) movement have been detained in Bishkek while protesting energy price hikes on October 15.

Some 50 activists rallied in downtown Bishkek on October 15 protesting recent increase of electricity price by 50 percent and demanding former energy minister Osmonbek Artykbaev to be held responsible.

When the protesters started setting up a yurt in Bishkek's central Gorky Park for hunger strikers, police detained five of them.

The Bishkek City Police Department’s spokesman, Bakyt Seitov, told RFE/RL that the activists had been detained for holding an unsanctioned public gathering.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
